2017-2018 Earth Science Syllabus
Letter to Students and parents
Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
Welcome to Physical Science at Brighten Academy. I am Ms. Jackson, and I am very excited about this school year. I am a graduate from the University of West Georgia and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, with a teaching certificate in secondary education. I have received extensive training that has aided me in becoming a great secondary science educator. Over several years, I student-taught within the Atlanta Public Schools System, Carrollton City Schools, and Carroll County Schools. My strengths are in planning and implementing inquiry-based lessons in science classrooms for the following subjects: Biology, Earth Science, Physical Science, Chemistry, Life Science, and Environmental Science.
Introducing new content is the most critical aspect of teaching. My goal is to get students engaged by exploring real life phenomena that will link to the Georgia Standards of Excellence. In addition to exploring real life phenomena, students will apply their content knowledge to complete hands on activities and labs that assist them in unlocking a deeper understanding of content knowledge.
I want to see every student succeed in my class. I am also a huge advocate for community building. We will get to know each other’s weaknesses and build on them to make each other better. To ensure that each student gets the help they need, communication is important on the behalf of all parties. My goal is to make this semester both interesting and challenging for our students.
I am looking forward to a very exciting and successful semester. I will be emphasizing student-driven lessons designed to engage and encourage critical thinking in students. I am very passionate about teaching science; I incorporate technology into lessons when possible. This school year students will learn required content but most importantly the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science. I look forward to parent/guardian involvement at every level. I welcome constant contact via email or remind (see syllabus for set up), and for those occasions that you truly need to discuss concerns, please do not hesitate to send me an email or we can schedule an appointment.
Thank you and welcome back!
Sincerely,
Ms. Martisia D. Jackson
